LAS’s real-world impact in 2024 is a reminder of what's possible in intelligence analysis.

The Laboratory for Analytic Sciences (LAS) at North Carolina State University released its 2024 Impact Report, highlighting the organization’s continued exploration of novel capabilities that improve intelligence analysis. This year’s report celebrates the lab’s groundbreaking work through cross-sector collaborations with faculty, students, companies, and government agencies.

LAS supports national security by focusing on the following research themes: content triage, human-machine teaming, and operationalizing artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Last year, LAS funded year-long research projects with 21 industry and academic collaborators, including universities like UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State, and Northwestern University, and companies like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SAS Institute. These projects aimed to aid intelligence analysts in evaluating large volumes of data.

The lab’s third annual Summer Conference on Applied Data Science (SCADS) also brought together 40 participants for an 8-week, cross-sector collaboration in Raleigh, NC. Researchers worked side-by-side on rapid prototyping to help the intelligence community with data analysis.

“NC State remains proud to partner with the U.S. Intelligence Community and all of our academic and industry collaborators, as LAS continues to drive analytics innovation and shape the landscape of intelligence analysis,” says Matthew Schmidt, principal investigator at LAS.
