LAS Releases Annual Impact Report

The 2025 report highlights the real-world effects of harnessing emerging technology to support intelligence analysts.

LAS 2025 Impact Report

The Laboratory for Analytic Sciences at NC State has released its 2025 Impact Report, showcasing the latest technological solutions for the U.S. Intelligence Community’s needs. The report highlights the lab’s robust unclassified infrastructure, which enables researchers to test and deploy AI in mission-aligned spaces; the latest improvements to audio and video analysis tools; and recent concepts developed in an academic setting that are now operational prototypes.

“Our success belongs to a diverse ecosystem of contributors,” says Sheila Bent, who served as acting director of LAS in 2025.

The LAS collaboration model is unique. With funding from the U.S. Department of Defense, NC State selects academic and industry experts to work closely with government researchers and analysts in an environment spanning classified and unclassified domains.

In 2025, the lab focused its projects on the following research themes: audio and video sensemaking, human-centered AI, and operationalizing artificial intelligence and machine learning. During the lab’s Summer Conference for Applied Data Science, researchers and developers worked directly with government analysts to address their most significant pain points. The results of these projects shape everything from federal policy to analysts’ daily workflows.
