Using Research to Improve Identification of Terrorists: Where We Are and Where We Need to Go

SPEAKER:  Sarah Desmarais

For several decades, academics and other independent researchers from diverse disciplines have been engaged in efforts to develop a conceptual understanding of violent extremism and the process of radicalization (King & Taylor, 2011). Though much has been written in the scientific literature about terrorism, the empirical evidence is still limited. This presentation will consist of three parts. First, we will provide an overview the state of the research on risk factors for violent extremism. Specifically, we will describe the methods of our recent systematic review of over 12,000 articles which revealed 205 articles that discussed factors associated to joining terrorist organizations or perpetrating terrorist attacks (Desmarais et al., 2017). Second, we will summarize findings of our systematic review as they relate to specific risk factors, describing those with at least some research supporting their association with terrorism. We also will discuss factors that have limited research support and those for which the research evidence suggests they are not associated with terrorism. Third, we will compare our findings in relation to the NCTC’s homegrown violent extremism mobilization indicators.

LAS aims to bring together a multi-disciplinary group of academic, industry, and government researchers, analysts and managers together to re-engineer the intelligence analysis process to promote predictive analysis. LAS will do this by conducting both classified and unclassified research in a variety of areas of research. The research done in this area will serve as the foundation for mission effects and integrated back into the enterprise.
